Youth Group
.................................................................................
The Saddlebred Riders United youth group is a club for young horse lovers at New Traditions Riding Academy/ Palos Hills Riding Stables. It was established 5 years ago in conjunction with the guidelines of the American Saddlebred Horse Association. The mission of the youth group is to promote the American Saddlebred breed while encouraging youth and teens to explore all aspects of equine care and companionship. In the recent past, the Saddlebred Riders United youth group has sponsored classes at the barn’s horse shows; provided bag lunches to the homeless; invited guest speakers to discuss topics such as myofacial massage therapy for horses, and the sports psychology of riding with a lecture entitled:” Winning from the neck up”. They have held “horse washes” and had bake sales to raise money, and have used their funds to purchased embroidered saddle pads for New Traditions Riding Academy to be used at special events such as barn shows and academy riding classes. In addition, the youth group has donated money to a therapeutic riding program in North Carolina which uses American Saddlebred horses to help special needs children realize the beauty horses and the benefits of their companionship. The group is dedicated to learning about the American Saddlebred horse and promoting this wonderful breed, while having fun and spending time with other kids who love horses, too.

The American Saddlebred’s style, good looks and reliable disposition have long made him a popular choice for children and youth. For more than a century, small children have taken their first riding lessons on Saddlebreds, soon competed on Saddlebreds in a variety of disciplines, and remained devoted to the breed for a lifetime. It is no accident that many of today’s breeders, trainers and owners are second-, third-, fourth- and fifth-generation American Saddlebred devotees.  Precisely because of this breed’s suitability for young people, the American Saddlebred Horse Association has developed an exciting selection of fun, educational programs for youth. Participation in each of these activities, described as follows, is strong and enthusiastic. Get your Saddlebred and come join the fun!

An American Saddlebred Horse Association Youth Club is the perfect place to meet other young people interested in horses, and the perfect way to become involved with American Saddlebreds – to have great fun, friendly competition, and learn new skills. As an ASHA Youth Club member, you can help plan and take part in activities and projects you might never have dreamed possible. You can be part of something that will benefit your club, your community, and the American Saddlebred breed itself. And here is the best part – ASHA Youth Club members need not own a horse or even be taking riding lessons to participate. Any young person who likes horses is welcome!

In addition to a wide variety of activities and projects, both entertaining and educational, membership in an ASHA Youth Club will provide you with the opportunity to participate in all the American Saddlebred Horse Association’s programs for youth. These include judging contests, gymkhana events, trail rides, farm visits, clinics, horse shows, and other horse-related adventures.

Our goal is to meet once a month and to have a monthly activity.  All participants have to become members of the American Saddlebred Horse Association.  Also, there is a $5.00 fee to join the youth group.  There is an impressive total now of 41 members, and there are tons of new friends to meet…...

If you are not a member yet……become a member today.  It is never too late to join!

This is an incentive-based program that rewards you with gifts and recognition for doing what you already love to do. Here’s how it works. You keep a log of the hours you spend riding registered American Saddlebreds. You need not own a horse to participate. Special Saddle Time awards will be given when you complete various hour levels. For example, you will receive a patch and a lapel pin when you have completed 50 hours of riding; a patch and shirt when you’ve accrued 150 hours; a patch and a tote bag when your hours total 200; and additional gifts and recognition as your Saddle Time hours accumulate. Hours count in the following activities: trail riding, lessons, parades, drill team, and non-USA Equestrian (formerly AHSA) recognized events and shows (a 4-H show is a good example).

Saddle Time Rules

  • One time enrollment fee of $35.00.
  • Hours must be earned on registered American Saddlebred – Ownership of horse is not required.
  • ASHA Membership is required in order for hours to count.
  • Time recorded begins upon ASHA's receipt of enrollment fee, and there is no time limit as long as membership stays active.
  • Hours are recorded on the official hours log report by the honor system.
  • Hours required for each award are cumulative.
  • Hours WILL count in the following activities: trail riding, lessons, parades, drill teams, and USA Equestrian (formerly AHSA) non-recognized events/shows.
  • Hours WILL NOT count in the following activities: USA Equestrian (formerly AHSA) recognized events/shows, competitive trail rides, endurance rides, driving, grooming, and hot walking.

The ASHA Junior Judging program was developed specifically to educate youth: to expand their understanding of class and show procedures, conduct, and specifications and priorities for judging the American Saddlebred horse. No matter which aspect of involvement with American Saddlebreds most interests you, expanding your knowledge will accomplish several things, the most important of which will be your own enjoyment of your horse. Secondly, ASHA Junior Judging provides the fun and satisfaction of working with other youth who share your interests. Thirdly, Junior Judges very often discover that their love for judging lasts a lifetime, and that the contributions they can make to the American Saddlebred breed are almost unlimited.

Complete information packets are available through ASHA for youth leaders and horse show managers interested in holding junior judging contests. These educational and instructional packets contain complete rules, scoring system, sample judging cards, questionnaires, and pre-contest educational ideas and suggestions. Year-end high point awards for junior division and senior division Junior Judges can be earned through ASHA Charter Clubs coast-to-coast. Check out how easy it is to hold an ASHA Junior Judging Contest!

You may not receive an Oscar when you win, and the presentations aren’t televised worldwide, but this popular program has been a big hit ever since its inception. The American Saddlebred Horse Association Foundation proudly offers this unique program that encourages and recognizes juveniles and adults participating in Academy classes, which are held at tournaments and horse shows around the country. These classes create an opportunity for beginning saddle seat riders to develop and fine-tune not only their horsemanship skills, but also their sportsmanship, and an appreciation for the American Saddlebred that will last a lifetime.

An Academy class is any class offered at a local tournament in which two or more stables are participating, or any class at an open show that is designated "Academy." Participants compete on horses designated as "school" horses, that is, horses that are regularly used in riding lesson program instruction. Acceptable riding attire is jodhpurs or dark pants, boots and dress shirt, or sweatshirt bearing your stable’s logo. Riding habits are unacceptable, and hard hats are optional, so if expense is a factor, this may be the division for you!

Academy Awards Rules

  • Points accumulate between October 1 and September 30 of each year and are tabulated by riding instructors. Points are kept on an official point sheet and must be signed by BOTH the rider and the instructor or youth club advisor.
  • The point sheets are to be sent to ASHA by October 31 of the award year for verification.
  • One (1) point is given for participating in an academy riding or driving class. One (1) point is given for placing 2nd – 8th in an academy riding or driving class. Two (2) points are given for placing 1st in an academy riding or driving class.
  • ASHA membership is required in order for the points to count.
  • A bronze medallion will be awarded for earning 15 points in the first year of competition, a silver medallion for 15 points in the second consecutive year, and a gold for 15 points in the third consecutive year.
